Dont tell them at all. They will get the idea when the court papers arrive that you have filed for divorce, and have an attorney, and are prepared.

I'm 63 and have gone through a divorce. I would NOT start out by saying I wanted a divorce. I would tell him how unhappy I am with the relationship. I would tell him about the things that made me love him initially and about the things that are no longer there that I used to love about him. I would tell him about things that are important to me that are no longer happening or present in the relationship. If I felt I needed help talking to him, I would suggest we both see a counselor. I would approach the situation that I want to try to save the relationship.

[love] I would tell him with love. Most people going through divorce seem to take their cues from tv or movies or other horror stories they've heard. STOP Be honest and compassionate. Come from a place of kindness and refuse to fight and argue. This is tough enough, do it without including the weight of the burden of 'a bad scene'
